They measure at 8.5 inches long and can be stretched to a maximum of 9 inches around, so there is plenty of breathing room for chunky thighs.
They are pictured oriented in the way they are to be worn as the body of the leg warmer features decreases to hug the leg as it draws closer to the ankles.
